Find the next place to revisit

Looking for a wild Pokémon or a trainer you missed? Open ITEM → KEY ITEMS → FIELD GUIDE and choose USE. After you receive the Pokédex, the old man in Viridian City gives you his guide as you head north. His lessons on the guide and catching Pokémon are optional. If you have already passed him and don't have the guide, speak to him in Viridian City to receive it.

The list grows as you explore. Choose a place you have visited to open its WILD POKéMON list first. Left and Right switch to TRAINERS when both lists are available. A place with only trainers opens their list directly. The label on the bottom border shows which list you are reading.

The Field Guide’s Red Version places list shows caught Pokémon and trainer progress beneath each name, with Sea Route 21 at CAUGHT 3/12 and DEFEATED 8/9.
Read the progress beneath a place to decide where to explore next.

Beneath each place, CAUGHT shows your Pokémon collection progress and DEFEATED tracks its first trainer victories. Once those battles are complete, the trainer line changes to REMATCHED where rematches are available. A building’s totals include its other floors, so explore further when a total still has a gap. You can also register the Field Guide to open it with Select.

See what is left to catch

The wild list follows your Pokédex records. Seen Pokémon have names. An unseen Pokémon keeps a dashed row, so its place in the list stays visible. Pokémon you have caught or received have the same Poké Ball marker as in your Pokédex, wherever you found them.

Caught markers follow your Pokédex. Dashed entries keep unseen Pokémon’s slots visible.

The list includes wild encounters on land, while using Surf and while fishing, plus Pokémon you can approach for a wild battle. Each species appears once. A visited place’s list covers all its floors and sections, so look further around the area when entries are still missing. The list uses your adventure’s Red Version or Blue Version encounters.

Use Up and Down to read the list. Press A or tap a named Pokémon to open its Pokédex page. B returns to the same list and selection. In the Pokédex, Up and Down browse the place’s known Pokémon. For help making a catch, choosing a rod or finding a habitat, read catching Pokémon.

Check which trainer is missing

On the TRAINERS page, use Up or Down to choose a trainer, then press A to open the record. A trainer’s second line shows NOT BATTLED, BATTLED, DEFEATED or REMATCHED. In a building, the floor appears on that line too.

A title such as TRAINERS 3/6 means you have defeated three of the six trainers recorded for that place. The individual rows show who still needs a first victory or a rematch.

TRAINERS 8/9 counts first victories. Read each row to check its rematch progress.

Trainers you have not fought have a numbered label and a silhouette. Their record shows whether you have battled, defeated and successfully rematched them. B returns to the list without losing your place.

The Field Guide keeps track of trainers you can return to. For a VS Seeker achievement, check ordinary trainers for the REMATCHED label. Use the VS Seeker to arrange an ordinary trainer rematch. Named opponents follow their own rematch challenges.

Look through their teams

After you have fought a trainer, press Left or Right on their record to browse all their team pages. The label on the bottom border names the team or Badge stage. Each Pokémon’s name appears above its level, so you can compare the lineup before returning for a challenge.

Flip through team pages with Left or Right, then choose a Pokémon to open its Pokédex page.

Select a team member with Up or Down and press A to open its Pokédex page. B brings you back to the same team and selection. Pokédex details still follow what you have seen, caught and unlocked in your own adventure.

Team pages show the trainer’s current lineups, including their different stages. They are a reference for planning your next battle. For help choosing your own moves and training your partners, read training your team.
